Self-Instructional Materials and Computer Assisted Examination

One of the major deficiencies identified in students entering this and other Clinical Laboratory Science curricula has been in their ability to perform laboratory calculations, such as preparation of dilutions, metric conversions, molar and normal solution preparation, etc.   In an attempt to correct this deficit, this self-instructional program has been developed, the purpose of which is to ensure that when completed, the student can perform these basic laboratory calculations.  The following is the sequence of the program and the students' responsibilities:

 

1.                  All students will be given a self-instructional booklet containing explanations and examples of the types of problems encountered on the computer adaptive test.  This booklet is available on the Internet at: http://cls.umc.edu/COURSES/LabMath/MATHHAND.DOC and should be downloaded for review.

 

2.                  Students should work through each of the units of study, first reading the instructional materials, and then taking the self-assessment examination available for that unit.

 

3.                  Following completion of each of the units of study, the student is then ready to take the general proficiency examination in laboratory mathematics available either on the Laboratory Mathematics Index page or at: http://wiggers.hypermart.net/exams/labmath/mathtest.cgi using the link for the self-assessment examination at the top of the page.  An evaluation of the student’s performance will be presented following each practice test, and the proficiency examination.
